Does regional culture affect innovation in the EU?
Culture, as a key driver of innovative activity, has been largely studied either at the national or at the organisational levels. This article investigates the relationship between culture and innovation, measured as the logarithm of patent applications to the EPO, at the regional level. Using European Social Survey questionnaire and Eurostat data, and employing factor analysis and multilevel models, the link between culture and innovation is examined for old (EU-15) and new EU member states. The results of the analysis conclude that cultural relationship with innovation is only significant for the regions of countries belonging to the EU-15.
