Associate Professor of Accounting Kertu Lääts Elected as the New Head of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Tartu

At its meeting on December 18, the Council of the University of Tartu’s Faculty of Economics and Business Administration elected Associate Professor of Accounting Kertu Lääts as the new Head of the Faculty. She will assume her new role on February 7, succeeding Associate Professor Anne Reino, whose term ends on the same date. Reino will continue serving the faculty as Vice-Head for Academic Affairs.

In her statement, Lääts emphasized that the leadership transition marks the beginning of a new cycle for the Faculty of Economics. “We will focus on reviewing our past achievements and setting fresh objectives for the future,” Lääts said. Her priorities include improving the well-being of faculty staff, attracting new talent, and enhancing the faculty’s visibility both in Estonia and internationally. She also highlighted the importance of making well-considered and financially sound decisions to ensure the faculty’s sustainable development and long-term stability.

Lääts graduated in 1996 from the University of Tartu with a degree in accounting and marketing, and went on to earn a master’s degree in economics from Stockholm University in 1998. In 2011, she defended her doctoral thesis at the University of Tartu on the topic of managerial accounting developments in a dynamic economic environment, focusing on both business and public sector organizations.

Throughout her career, Lääts has held various positions at the University of Tartu, including serving as a lecturer and associate professor in accounting. Her main research interests lie in the digitalization of accounting, the evolution of managerial accounting in a rapidly changing economic landscape, corporate sustainability, and sustainability reporting. She has participated in numerous development and research projects aimed at improving the use of accounting information in management. Lääts has published extensively in academic journals and remains actively involved in several international professional organizations.
