This course provides an understanding of Industrial Organization (IO) theory and thus the foundations for competitive strategy and competition policy. Throughout the course we study theoretical models which clarify the interactions between market forces, how firms organize themselves, technological innovation and firm capabilities. Issues examined include
  • Mode of competition (price, quality, quantity), the models and extensions,
  • R&D races and the economics of innovation
  • Mergers and acquisitions and how firms are organized within an industry
  • The IO of healthcare, in particular competition between for-profit and nonprofit organizations
