The scientific evening “Foreign Banks in the Bank System of the Baltic States” will take place on November 13, at 16.15 at the University of Tartu, School of Economics and Business Administration, Room 307, Juhan Liivi 4, Tartu, Estonia. In this scientific evening Prof. Jan Körnert (University of Greifswald) will hold a guest lecture “Are Baltic Banks a Gateway for Unpleasant Investors?“ and Mr. Peeter Luikmel (Bank of Estonia) will hold a presentation "Features of Estonian Economics".
Since 2003, Jan Körnert has been Professor at the Faculty of Law and Economics at the University of Greifswald. About the bank system in Baltic States he says: “In the late 1990s, a number of foreign banking groups made their market entries into the banking systems of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Today, these international institutions dominate the banking systems in these countries, thereby wielding considerable power”. Prof. Körnert will first examine the economic and political influence of such foreign banks within the three Baltic States, he will show how these foreign-controlled banks could further extend their political reach to the European Union.
Mr. Peeter Luikmel is an economist of Bank of Estonia. About the economic situation in Estonia he says: “Estonia has a very small and open economy. Since the introduction of Estonian Kroon, the country has been managed in a fixed exchange rate arrangement.” In the presentation Mr Luikmel will highlight the main elements of the Estonian economy and financial sector.
The evening will be moderated by Mr. Lenno Uusküla (Tartu University).
