Firms’ early internationalization processes and their association with founders’ entrepreneurial experience and financial performance
This research contributes to the literature on firms’ early internationalization processes (EIPs) by demonstrating that exporting firms adopt EIPs that deviate from those known previously. EIPs are detected based on 994 Estonian exporting firms founded in 2014-2017, while their export performance is followed during the first five years of activities. EIPs are linked with entrepreneurial types, indicating that habitual entrepreneurs with earlier export experience are more likely to use EIPs with quicker, sustained, and intensive international expansion. Finally, the latter EIPs are more likely to be associated with higher financial performance.
Keywords: International new ventures; early internationalization processes; novice and habitual (export) entrepreneurs; financial performance
