Doctoral studies and micro degrees

Doctoral studies in the social sciences are for those who want to ask big questions and answer them rigorously—with research that can shape scholarship, policy, and practice. The programme prepares you for a career as an independent researcher and university teacher, as well as for senior expert roles in organisations that rely on evidence-based insight.

Throughout your doctoral journey, you will strengthen the skills to design and conduct independent research, develop new approaches, and communicate results clearly to both academic and non-academic audiences.

The programme consists of two modules:

  • Research, Development and Creative Work (5460 hours; 210 ECTS)
  • Study module (780 hours; 30 ECTS)

Admission

Micro-degree and micro-credential programmes at the University of Tartu let you upgrade your skills fast with university-level courses—without committing to a full degree.

Choose a micro-degree (12–30 ECTS, usually 1–2 semesters) built from degree-study courses where you often study alongside degree students, or a micro-credential (5–30 ECTS, typically within one semester) in a dedicated learning group—both offered in block-mode or online and fee-based.

Finish, and you’ll earn a University of Tartu continuing education certificate—and, if you decide to go further, a smart step toward degree studies.
