HRM in a strong context: Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic

JORGE F. S. GOMES (Lisbon School of Economics and Management)

This research sought to understand how companies and the HRM function adapted to the initial phases of the health crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Data is based on interviews to 20 HR professionals and managers, in two moments during the pandemic: during the first lockdowns, and six months later. The results are organised in four categories: 1) HRM and the company response phases; 2) role and relevance of the HRM function; 3) planning-acting-planning cycle; and 4) the HR capacity to manage complexity and simplicity. Furthermore, the two moments of data collection show how HRM evolved from the initial stages of the pandemic, to a transition stage in which new HR roles, activities, and practices emerged.
