Univeristy of Tartu (UT) Institute of Computer Science, Garage48 and UT Startup Lab organised the 8th Student Startup Camp that brought together university students from all over Estonia. Due to coronavirus restrictions, the camp took place completely online.

The university’s orienteering month – May – is about to end, but as the initiative has attracted much interest, the orienteering course will remain open until 6 June. The university invites all employees, students, alumni and their families as well everyone else to orienteering in the city of Tartu. Come to discover places where the university family has done exercise and sports since the early 19th century!

The pre-selection round of Kaleidoskoop also took place completely online this spring. Student teams selected based on three-minute video pitches will have the opportunity to present their ideas at the business festival Startup Day on 27 August.

It is time to elect the student representatives to the faculty and institute/college councils, who helps to promote student life. Every faculty and institute has a student council that represents the students in the given faculty's and institute's council. Electronical voting takes place from the 13th of May 2021 at 10:00 to the 23rd of May at 23:59.

Despite the government’s decision to allow face-to-face studies also in higher education starting from 17 May, the university continues work as previously planned. Decisions about the organisation of studies continue to be made by the head of institute in cooperation with the vice dean for academic affairs. The only change is that the requirement not to exceed 25% room capacity has been lifted. The allowed percentage of room capacity is to be decided by the head of institute.

Throughout May, the university invites all employees, students, alumni and their families to orienteering in the city of Tartu. This semester, the Mentor Feedback Carousel of the Starter idea development programme was held online and lasted for a whole week. The Mentor Feedback Carousel is a stage in the programme ran by the Startup Lab and gives student teams a great chance to get honest feedback and recommendations on their business idea.

Studies will continue largely online and classroom studies should be kept to a minimum in April As the epidemiological situation in Estonia is very serious and the Estonian government has imposed additional restrictions on educational institutions, the University of Tartu will continue with similar organisation of studies as in March.

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Visiting Professor of Democracy in the Digital Age at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies of the University of Tartu, will be giving four public lectures on “Security, Democracy and the Digital World” in the spring semester 2021. This century has seen rapid technological developments and emerging possibilities for governance, such as more precise and faster decision-making and better public services.

In a memorandum of cooperation, the parties agreed on a common priority to establish a platform supporting the development of research-based businesses with a longer development cycle.
