Congratulations to our new doctor Tõnis Tänav and his supervisor prof. Kadri Ukrainski! On March 26th at 14 we had the first doctoral thesis defence at the School of Economics and Business Administration, which was done virtualy! At one point there were about 70 participants watching the defence. Tõnis Tänav successfully defended his thesis “Dynamics of Firm Innovation Strategies: Relationship with Public Sector Support“. Books can be borrowed again from the University of Tartu Library
Although the University of Tartu Library is closed due to the emergency situation, users can again request books via the e-catalogue ESTER starting today, 25 March. The requested books can be picked up from smart lockers in the lobby of the library.

On 20 March the UT leaders will answer university members’ questions regarding the changes introduced due to the emergency situation
On Friday, 20 March, at 14:00 there will be a video broadcast on the university website, where the rector and members of the Rector’s Office of the University of Tartu give an overview of the reorganisation of work at the university during the emergency situation, and answer questions sent by university members. In the broadcast, Rector Toomas Asser, Academic Secretary Tõnis Karki and Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Aune Valk will speak about the new organisation of work.

All university buildings to be closed for the public from Monday
From Monday, 16 March, all UT buildings are closed for visitors and students. The buildings are not alarmed and staff members can enter using their university ID card. Visitors and students are not allowed in the buildings. If visitors need to get in, an employee must personally meet them. Receptionists and information secretaries in the buildings will continue work as usual, cloakrooms are closed.

Today, on 19 February, the traineeship and job fair of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is held in the Philosophicum, and the Maarjavälja career day for students of medicine and science and technology takes place in the Physicum.

University of Tartu opens its doors to future applicants
On 26 February, the University of Tartu (UT) holds an Open Doors Day during which final-year secondary school students and other future applicants can take part in various activities. The University of Tartu library hosts a study fair on the UT curricula at which experienced specialists give admission and career advice. Together with representatives of student organisations, participants can find out how to be more than a student and what else they can do for personal development during their studies at the university.

University of Tartu Delta Centre to be opened in Tartu City Centre
The University of Tartu Delta Centre, one of the most modern centre for digital technology, analytics and economic ideas in the Nordic countries, will open its doors on Wednesday, 29 January at 12:00. The Delta Centre comprises an academic and a research building and an entrepreneurship building and will bring together more than 3000 students, lecturers, researchers and development employees from companies.

Ott Pärna joins University of Tartu Delta Centre
Economic expert and entrepreneur Ott Pärna took up the position of Head of Marketing of University of Tartu Delta Centre on 1 October. Erik Puura, UT Vice-Rector for Development, says that the university offered the position of Marketing Director to Pärna to build up and develop the entrepreneurial image of the university.

Startup Lab’s teams were spinning around at Mentor Feedback Carousel
On 24 October, Startup Lab hosted a Mentor Feedback Carousel which brought together teams of the Starter Tartu programme and experienced mentors to help develop the teams’ ideas. Teams rotated between mentors to get feedback to their ideas from different experts. At the end of the event, mentors gave virtual play money cheques to the teams they liked the best.

Associate Professor Dafnis Coudounaris received an award for the article
The paper by Sthapit, E. and Coudounaris, D.N. (2018), “Memorable Tourism Experiences: Antecedents and Outcomes”, which was published in Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism, Vol. 18, No. 1, pp. 72-94, won the 2018 citation award in the 28th Nordic Symposium on Tourism and Hospitality Research 2019.

Professor Raul Eamets will continue as the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences
On 22 October 2019 the electoral councils elected new deans for the University of Tartu’s four faculties. Raul Eamets, who was supported by 176 members of the electoral council, will continue as the dean of the Faculty of social Sciences.
