On September 25-27, Priit Vahter and Jaan Masso from our school attended AIB-CEE (Academy of International Business Central & Eastern European Chapter) conference at the Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania. The conference focused on international business in the dynamic environment: changes in digitalization, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Startup Lab extends its reach in Ukrainian education
The InnoSME project, which is designed to promote innovation in Ukrainian small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) so as to strengthen their competitiveness by building efficient networks between universities and SMEs, was launched on 16 September under the aegis of the University of Tartu’s Startup Lab. The project will focus on boosting skills and awareness in innovation and product development.

Startup Lab Idea Hackathon focuses on ideas in healthcare
The University of Tartu’s Startup Lab launched the new season of its business idea development programme Starter Tartu on 26 September with the Idea Hackathon. The opening event brought together 150 entrepreneurship-minded students from high schools and universities who presented their ideas, joined teams and later that same night started working together on their business ideas.

sTARTUp Lab hosted health tech startups Demo Day
12 health tech teams from a cruise hackathon E-Boat Bootcamp 2019 gathered in Tallinn on 19th September for the final anchor point to share their journey and show amazing solutions in healthcare. E-Boat is an accelerator for start-ups with innovative health solutions. The unique programme consisted of six weeks of distance learning followed by a two-week cruise and hackathon on the Baltic Sea (Gdansk-Klaipeda-Riga-Stockholm-Tallinn), where participants further developed, validated and fine-tuned their products for launch in the European market.

Today the University of Tartu's Delta Centre family gathered together for the first time under the roof of our soon-to-be completed house. We can't say the whole family, but at least some representatives from each unit were presented. It was a pleasure to get to know each other and to talk about future cooperation opportunities.

This year Andres Kuusik, sTARTUp Day idea founder, will be added to Tartu Pioneers' Alley. The purpose of the alley is to recognize the people associated with Tartu who have made a significant contribution to the development of the city. This year a total of 36 candidates were submitted to the jury.

Andres Kuusik is nominated for a footprint on the Tartu Pioneer’s Alley. The winner will be chosen by the public and we ask you to join the forces and vote: https://tasku.ee/teerajajate-rahvahaaletus/ The page is in Estonian, but you can find Andres Kuusik easily in the voting box. Every year, a new set of footprints is added to the Alley to honour the people who have contributed to the development of Tartu. The Alley is located by Tasku centre and aims to encourage people to walk in their shoes.

University of Tartu’s Centre for Entrepreneurship of Delta Centre Celebrates Completion of First Construction Stage
On Thursday 1 August at 15:00 p.m., the University of Tartu’s Centre for Entrepreneurship celebrated the completion of the first construction stage. “I am very pleased that construction has so far gone as planned and stayed on schedule,” said Heiki Pagel, Head of the Real Estate Department of the university. “In order to recognise the constructors for achieving the maximum height of the building, we invited the future tenants of the building and all the constructors to the celebration of the completion of the first construction stage.”

Do we want to change the ways the sea areas are used now and in the future?
The Plan4Blue final conference programme was held in Helsinki on 4 – 5 June 2019. Our Professor of Econometrics Tiiu Paas gave a presentation ”The role of quantitative research in the process of creating the alternative scenarios". Prof. Tiiu Paas, Maryna Tverdostup, Gaygysyz Ashyrov and Annika Jaansoo also presented the results of their research group, what was used to work out sea areas scenarios. In this project, attention was focused on visualization and interaction with practitioners.

The unique business development programme NGAL® (Network Globally, Act Locally) takes place for the fifth time already. This year’s programme starts in Tartu on 2 June, continues in Tallinn and ends in Charleston, USA, on 14 June.

Three new professors confirmed for School of Economics and Business Administration
At the Senate meeting today, three new professors: Jaan Masso, Anneli Kaasa and Priit Vahter were elected to the School of Economics and Business Administration. Prof. Dr. Helge Löbler was elected as honorary doctor. Kadri Ukrainski, head of the School of Economics and Business Administration said: "It is a great pleasure for us to have three new professors who bring a youthful spark and increase the visibility of our school.

Possibility to ask about developments in Hungary
Prof. Miklos Szanyi, the director of the Institute of World Economics at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences will visit Tartu next week to give a presentation “Varieties of State Capitalism“. The lecture will take a closer look into different relations between political power and economy.

Visiting the University of Donja Gorica in Montenegro
Representatives of the School of Economics and Business Administration visited on April 22-27th the University of Donja Gorica and Technopolis in Montenegro. The purpose was to introduce the activities of UT Idea Lab and explore possibilities for further cooperation. Representatives (Kadi Kaur, Eneli Kindsiko and Madli Kõiv) were warmly welcomed. The University of Donja Gorica has also their own Idea Lab, but the concept of lab is still being developed. So it was a great opportunity to exchange ideas.

Visiting the University of Szeged in Hungary
At the beginning of April the delegation of our School was in Hungary, at the University of Szeged. There was a conference “Readiness for the 4th Industrial Revolution in the European Union” and the doctoral seminar “Technological Change and Development” on the April 5th and 6th. The opening presentation of the conference was made by prof. Kadri Ukrainski and our doctorants Laura Helena Kivi, Tõnis Tänav and Youjun Shin performed at the seminar.

University of Tartu Idea Lab is transforming entrepreneurship education in Ukraine
On 19 March, an interactive seminar on innovative learning methods was conducted by the University of Tartu Idea Lab at the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science in Kyiv, with the audience comprising nearly 200 lecturers of universities all over Ukraine. The seminar was organised in collaboration with the Ukrainian partner organisation.
