Let's start the semester with a learning motivation seminar! First-year students and lecturers are invited to attend the learning motivation seminar “University Years as a Real Development Experience”. The seminar will be held on September 7th, 10:15–13:00, J.Liivi 4-307. The seminar will stimulate an appetite for learning at university and help participants connect more deeply with their own goals and accomplices. Topics:

In June 26-29, 80 researchers of Economics, Management, Law and Public Administration from nine countries have met in Kubija for the PhD Summer School. During the four days, six guest lectures have been given on topics ranging from the blockchain technologies and public sector issues to the international economics and statistical methods. 18 working paper presentations and 12 poster presentations given by doctoral students took place.

Hello! I am Rahul Puniani, a current Masters student at the School of Economics and Business Administration (SEBA) at the University of Tartu (UT). I study Innovation and Technology Management (ITM). If you think this sounds fancy, then your suspicion is warranted: it actually is. My programme encompasses a diverse range of subjects from Business to IT to Innovation and more. It’s an interdisciplinary course within a multidisciplinary environment. With some ups and more downs in life, ending up in the jewel of the Baltics, Estonia has been worth it.

The Korea related conference takes place for the second time in Tartu, supported by the Academy of Korean Studies and Doctoral School in Economics and Innovation (European Union Regional Development Fund). The topic is „Geopolitical changes, economic innovation and international relations: Korea and Estonia”.

At an extraordinary meeting on 1 March, the council of the Faculty of Medicine decided to submit professor Toomas Asser as a candidate to the post of the rector of the University of Tartu. All members the council of the Faculty of Medicine who attended the meeting voted for nomination of professor Toomas Asser as the rector’s candidate.

Last week the conference „Geopolitical changes, economic innovation and international relations: Korea and Estonia” took place in Tartu. This was the second time that a conference on Korea, supported by UT School of Economics and Business Administration, the Academy of Korean Studies and Doctoral School in Economics and Innovation, convened in Tartu. The goal of the international conference was to expand Korean and Estonian relationships in the field and create an environment for meaningful discussion.

New inspirational material is available for lecturers who wish to integrate sustainability and renewable energy topics into their syllabus. The primer was compiled by faculty members from the University of St.Gallen in Switzerland, Sumy State University in Ukraine and the University of Tartu.

With great sorrow, the University of Tartu announces the unexpected death of Rector Volli Kalm on Saturday, December 23. Volli Kalm was born on February 10, 1953 in Vändra. He graduated from the University of Tartu in 1976 with a degree in geology. In 1984, Kalm earned his PhD in geology from the Estonian Academy of Sciences after successfully defending his doctoral thesis "Formation, composition and usage of glaciofluvial deposits in Estonia." From 1988-1989, he attended postdoctoral studies in the geology department of the University of Alberta.

At the extraordinary senate session on 27 December, the senate of the University of Tartu unanimously appointed professor Tõnu Lehtsaar as the acting rector. In his speech to the senate, Lehtsaar said that his primary goal as the university’s acting rector is to maintain stability and find a new rector. “We will keep the university going. I asked members of the Rector’s Office at the meeting this morning if they were willing to continue in their office. I didn’t expect them to answer right away, but they confirmed that we will go forward together,” he said.

The survey aims to determine the level of knowledge of students and their interests in learning about new technologies in the digital transformation of the economy. Results will be used for modifying existing curricula and for setting up new study programs which better fit the needs of the business community and society regarding digital transformation. On November 22 at 16.15, UT Professor of Asian Economy Peter Hwang will deliver his inaugural lecture in the University of Tartu assembly hall. The lecture deals with the rise of Asia and differences in Eastern and Western management styles. The economic and political capabilities and importance of Asian countries, especially China, has been on the rise in the world.
