The University of Tartu invites all to the inaugural lecture by Peter Hwang, UT Professor of Asian Economy.

Meelis Luht, former management board member of Eesti Meedia Group, will start work as the Director of Administration of the University of Tartu on 21 August. Rector Volli Kalm said the new director of administration has been in charge of several different areas of activity in his career and is a top leader with international work experience. We can see his capability as well as his desire and ambition to actively contribute to the implementation of the university’s development goals.

In October 1-2, 2017 the Third International Macroeconomic Seminar for PhD Students took place in Maardu Manor in cooperation with Eesti Pank and Professor Michael Funke from the University of Hamburg. Tradition began in 2006 when Professor Funke first arrived in Estonia with his doctoral students for a joint seminar. Doctoral students presented the results of their research papers at the seminar, and field experts from the University of Hamburg, Tallinn University of Technology, Eesti Pank and the University of Tartu provided feedback on the development of articles.

Bingo – we got it! 16 out of 59 projects were accepted for EU funding, and we’re in! the consortium partners from the Czech Republic, Estonia and Germany are all cheers when starting their first project meeting in Bielefeld Germany. The project funded by the EU’s Erasmus Plus program line Strategic Partnerships is to focus on the digital transformation of business models and universities and mutual co-operation. How businesses need to change and how universities need to adjust to become ‘change agents’ for regional companies will be topics of research and debate.

Peter Jan-Hong Hwang is the new professor of Asian in University of Tartu School of Economics and Business Administration, and has been employed for the next five years.

The economic institute of the University of Tartu is organizing a series of lectures on the specifics of Asian economics and its markets taking place Sept 11-14. The speaker will be Joseph Lau, a regarded international consultant, who has regularly visited and performed in Tartu since 2003. The lectures are held on three dates and all talk about the internationalization of firms, specifically in the Asian region – the economic specificities and entering the markets. All lectures are in English.

Maaja Vadi, Anne Reino and Anne Aidla are editing the special issue of the International Journal of Manpower titled "Relationship between Intangible Assets and Productivity - Proved Fact or Wishful Thinking?" The special issue is published in the frame of the project IUT 20-49 Structural Change as the Factor of Productivity Growth in the Case of Catching up Economies .

Tongji University (Shanghai) and University of Tartu Summer School in Economics On the 7th and 8th of August, a delegation from Tongji University (Shanghai, PRC) visited University of Tartu School of Economics and Business Administration. This was the second doctoral seminar since Tongji is an official partner university. The previous event took place 27-28th of March 2017, in Tongji.

On 7 August, the University of Tartu School of Economics and Business Administration starts moving to the former National Archives building in Liivi Street to operate there until the new academic and research building Delta is completed.

Until the new DELTA building is being built in the location of Narva mnt, SEBA will move to a temporary location into the former National Archive building at J. Liivi 4. The move will begin on the 7th of August and will probably take up the whole week. There may be problems with landline phone and internet connection during that time.

As a result of a naming competition, the new academic and research building of the Institute of Computer Science, the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics and the School of Economics and Business Administration to be completed in autumn 2019, will be named Delta.

Skype Estonia and the University of Tartu explore the factors that hinder women entering into the fast developing ICT sector and what should be done that the situation would be different.

On September 8, the election commissions approved the dean candidates for the University of Tartu’s four faculties. The new deans are elected at the end of September and beginning of October and their term of office begins on 1 January 2016 when the university’s academic units continue as four faculties within the new structure.

At its meeting of 9 December, the UT strategy committee discussed the location of the future IT development centre. After thorough deliberation of the arguments, it was decided that the preferred location for the centre is the Narva maantee area near Oeconomicum, the academic building of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. The choice was made between two remaining options—the university’s research campus in Maarjamõisa field and the Oeconomicum area on Narva maantee
