The University of Tartu has the largest number of graduates in Estonia—an estimated of 70 000 graduates. Aiming to bring the alumni community closer together, link them more to the university, develop mutual communication and professional cooperation, the University of Tartu launched a network for its alumni (www.utalumni.ee), novel in Estonia as well as Europe, the like of which is also used by the University of Oxford.

University of Tartu announced an architecture competition to find the best solution for the IT centre to be built on Narva Road. The city of Tartu decided to transfer the immovable property next to Oeconomicum to the university for building the centre. The centre will house the Institute of Computer Science, Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, and School of Economics and Business Administration. The building should be as energy efficient as possible.

Successful graduate of Bachelor of Business Administration, Nicholas Vandrey writes about how he ended up in Estonia and why he has remained here presently as well. Without a doubt, the first question I’m asked when meeting new people is, ‘Where are you from?’ That one is easy – I’m from Texas. Then, almost without fail, they’ll ask me how I ended up in Estonia. That one is a little more difficult to answer.

From 24 to 27 May, the international Nordic Econometric Meeting, organised by the University of Tartu School of Economics and Business Administration, is held in the Dorpat Convention Centre. One of the keynote speakers is winner of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2011 Christopher A. Sims. The conference concentrates on professional skills required by the financial sector in future, monetary policy and interactions between business cycles and financial markets.

Graduation ceremonies for the School of Economics and Business Administration will take place on June 20th, Tuesday. At 10.00 in the Assembly Hall of the main building (Ülikooli 18) for the graduates of the Master's degree programmes. At 13.00 in the White Hall of the University History Museum for the graduates of the Bachelor's degree programmes.

Liidia Kiisk will defend her doctoral thesis titled „Long-term nutritional study: anthropometrical and clinico-laboratory assessments in renal replacement therapy patients after intensive nutritional counselling“ on 27 January 2017 at 14:00. Location: Ravila 19-1006

The visit was scheduled to take place within the doctoral course in strategic management, where doctoral students had two months to develope scenarios on how cooperation between universities and companies would bring foreign investments into Estonia. The scenarios were presented on November 18th, with the President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid commenting on the doctoral students' work.

On December 9th, at the University of Tartu’s initiative, the first international business festival sTARTUp Day 2016 will be held. Over 1,000 entrepreneurs, investors, students, and scientists will come together and more than 40 speakers will discuss successful business models.

Last Thursday almost 200 students, entrepreneurs and start-up mentors gathered to generate and share ideas in the inspirational event “Idea Storm. 100 ideas that could change the world”. The discussions were held on 21 different topics, every discussion was lead by an entrepreneur from particular field. Later on, the best ideas and solutions from every table were presented.

It is extremely difficult to succeed in Asia without knowing the local language and culture. University of Tartu Asian Centre brings together Asian expertise which has until now been rather dispersed in Estonia, shares its experience and uses contacts of an international cooperation network to help the private and public sector, organisations or private persons with matters related to Asia. The centre’s work is not limited to China, Japan, Korea or India, it also includes Middle Eastern countries and Turkey.

At the international innovation competition in Shanghai, which had more than 700 participants from 40 countries, UT doctoral students won first place with their idea about creating an innovative environmental indicator based on the analysis of the chemical composition of honey and which also promoted keeping bees in urban environments.

The Harry and Reba Huge Foundation, which has supported the mobility of UT students and lecturers with Nebraska Wesleyan University and the College of Charleston for the past ten years, has in the last two years also contributed to promoting entrepreneurship among students. Recently, the foundation and university signed an agreement according to which the foundation will support the development and implementation of research-based business ideas of entrepreneurial students with 50,000 dollars to the Vega Fund.

It is only a matter of time before the winners of the UT business and project idea competition Kaleidoskoop, the creators of the website Konku for rental ads without estate agents fee, will target the US market. The students, who participated in the international programme Network Globally, Act Locally, stood out in the US and won second place and 2,000 USD to implement their idea.

Three University of Tartu Idea Lab teams were chosen for the international Network Globally, Act Locally programme to develop their business ideas. The programme begins today in Tartu, where the entrepreneurial youth from two USA universities have also arrived, and ends on 24 June in Nebraska, USA, where teams will present their business ideas to the local business people.

On 9 December 2016, at the University of Tartu’s initiative, the international business conference sTARTUp Day takes place in Estonia for the first time. Around a thousand guests from Estonia and abroad are expected to come and enjoy an eventful day with renowned performers from around the world. Registration and ticket sales have begun.

The winner of the University of Tartu business and project idea competition Kaleidoskoop was team Konku, whose web and mobile application (www.konku.ee) provides rental ads without estate agent fees. The winning team has kept in mind people looking for a home and apartment owners and uses a very personal approach in both cases.
