Defence of Quantitative Economics master's theses June 8th

Entrepreneurial Tartu youth present business ideas prepared during semester
On 27 May 2016, fifteen teams compete in the University of Tartu business and project idea competition Kaleidoskoop to find the business ideas with the greatest potential and implement them with the help of development advisors. Ideas competing in the finals range from catering and computer games to new materials. The 15 finalists were selected from among 28 teams who represented the University of Tartu, Tartu Vocational Education Centre, Tartu College of Tallinn University of Technology, Tartu Art School and Hugo Treffner Gymnasium.

IT programmes received most applications among UT English-taught curricula
2,279 applications were submitted to the UT’s 19 English-taught bachelor’s and master’s curricula and the integrated curriculum of Medicine. Similarly to previous year, most applications were submitted for IT specialisations: the Computer Science programme received 242 applications from international candidates and 40 from Estonian candidates and the programme of Software Engineering had 277 and 41 applications respectively.

International European Banking Institute fills gap in Estonia
Estonia lacks researchers who work on legal problems in the field of finance on the presumed level of a research university. The European Banking Institute (EBI) supports the development of this field and experts in Estonia, because the network brings together the competence of institutions that study and carry out research on the problems of EU financial and supervisory authorities. Through the UT School of Law, the University of Tartu has been named a founding member and academic member of the EBI.

UT researchers advised Ukraine on organising knowledge transfer
UT researchers Associate Professor Aleksei Kelli and Professor Kadri Ukrainski, together with partners from Ukraine, organised a seminar in Ukraine on 12 April entitled “Research Organizations and Universities Knowledge Transfer in Ukraine: The Improvement of the Policy and Mechanisms in Ukraine, based on EU Experience“.

Winner of University of Tartu IT centre architectural competition is ICONICUM
From the six works submitted, the University of Tartu chose the architectural solution called ICONICUM for the IT centre to be built on Narva road. The authors of the idea will be revealed on 19 April 2016 at 15:00 in the University Café, when the envelopes with the name cards of the winning project will be opened.

Last week of admissions to English-taught curricula at UT
It is possible to apply for the English-taught master’s curricula at the UT Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Faculty of Social Sciences, the integrated curriculum of Medicine and the Faculty of Science and Technology’s bachelor’s curriculum Science and Technology until midnight on Friday, 15 April. Admission to the master’s curricula of the Faculty of Science and Technology has already ended.

University of Tartu and Swedbank support future lead analysts
Swedbank will support the University of Tartu Faculty of Economics and Business Administration’s English-taught programme Quantitative Economics. A 1000-euro grant will be awarded each year to the author of the best master’s thesis. The aim is to motivate students to work in a field with good career potentials at institutions that conduct economic analysis and research, including banks.

Vega fund grantee develops measuring blood pressure with 3D images of blood vessels
The University of Tartu and SEB Vega fund divided 20 100 euros between four teams for developing knowledge-intensive ideas. The funding helps to develop, for example, an automatic system for measuring blood pressure in real-time and a security system which makes keys and smart cards a thing of the past.

On 2 December, British journal Times Higher Education published their ranking The Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings, where the University of Tartu placed 31st. This is the third annual ranking of universities of emerging economies compiled by THE. The previous two ranked the 100 best, this year there are 200 universities on the list. UT is in the ranking for the first time this year.

Estonia’s national university celebrates 96th anniversary
On Tuesday, 1 December, the University of Tartu celebrates the 96th anniversary of the national university with the traditional ceremony, torch-light procession and ball. Two honorary doctorates and 112 doctorates will be conferred at the ceremony and the University of Tartu Contribution to Estonian National Identity award will be presented. The ceremony is broadcasted live on www.uttv.ee.

Start-up company involving BBA student took third prize at ClimateLaunchpad 2015
Estonian start-up ReLaDe, which also involves a Business Administration student Andrew Wilfong as Business Development Specialist is developing reusable biological enzymes that will change the way you wash your clothes. And with the company recently taking third prize at ClimateLaunchpad 2015 competition, chemical detergents could soon become a thing of the past.
