In order to keep the working and learning environment as normal as possible in the new academic year, the general rule of conduct applies that staff and students who work and study in the university buildings have been vaccinated against the coronavirus or wear masks.

On 7 and 8 October, the ENLIGHT online conference “Social Responsibility in Challenging Times” will take place, where renowned European researchers discuss the importance of social sciences in the changing times.

The year 2021 marks 100 years from the beginning of official relations and friendship between Estonia and Japan. From 13–15 October, a lecture by the ambassador of Japan, a concert of Japanese music and the “Multidisciplinary conference on the economic relations and embedded cultural perspectives between the EU and Japan” will take place at the University of Tartu.

The panel will explore leadership challenges for PhD supervisors that are related with wider doctoral personal development needs. Panel discussion takes place on October 15 at 10:00-12:00.

At the beginning of the academic year, the University of Tartu and Tartu University Hospital are jointly organising vaccination days near the university’s study buildings to further improve the chances of starting face-to-face studies and meeting in the lecture halls. University members who have not been vaccinated yet can get the vaccine against Covid-19 without prior booking in the following places: at the university’s main building in room 140 (the first room on the right from the main entrance)

On 16 September, the UT Startup Lab’s idea development programme Starter started its new semester with an almost 5-hour idea hackathon at the University of Tartu Delta Centre. The participants shared interesting ideas and listened to inspiring speeches, and joined a team or idea they liked. At the end of the day, teams were formed to test the viability of their ideas in the Starter workshops.

On 30 September, the Delta Trends Day 2021 “Reinventing a 400-year-old university for talent” takes place in the Delta Centre of the University of Tartu. At the free online event, visionaries and experts from many walks of life share ideas and thoughts about studies, research and leadership at the university of the future. The working language is English.

The U4Society Social Sciences, Economics and Law (SSEL) Online Conference on Social Responsibility in Challenging Times will be held on 7–8 October 2021. The conference aims to bring together researchers and PhD students from the participating U4 Society Network universities (Ghent, Göttingen, Groningen, Uppsala and Tartu) and the universities from the ENLIGHT consortium (Basque Country, Bordeaux, Comenius Bratislava, Galway, Ghent, Göttingen, Groningen, Tartu and Uppsala).

Kaleidoskoop, the biggest student pitching competition in South Estonia, reached the finals: five student teams presented their business ideas at the Startup Day business festival, held from 25 to 27 August.

To help promote vaccination in Tartu and Tartu County, on Saturday, the vaccination bus of Tartu University Hospital moves from Raatuse 22 to the city centre, next to Tartu Kaubamaja. On the bus, it is possible to get vaccinated from 10 to 16.

The Futulab environment invites employers to involve students in projects to realise an idea or find a solution to a specific problem.

The sTARTUp Day business festival takes place at the Estonian National Museum from 25 to 27 August. More than 150 inspiring speakers get on stage in the three-day programme, and over 100 business ideas will be presented to entrepreneurs and investors. For the third time, the University of Tartu is leading the "Science to Business" programme. The university's research-based spin-offs and success stories of business cooperation are introduced in the demo area.

This week the vaccination team from the University of Tartu Hospital will share information about coronavirus vaccinations on Car Free Avenue. The vaccination team will be present on July 27 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., on July 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on July 30 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The team can answer questions. It is possible to print out a digital vaccination certificate on site for those who have been vaccinated but do not have the opportunity to print one themselves.

We'd like to start teaching and studies in the autumn as normally as possible and meet face to face in class, and therefore it is important that as many of our new and returning students and university staff as possible are vaccinated. The nearest vaccination locations can be found on the website vaktsineeri.ee.

According to the respondents, the University of Tartu diploma is highly valued in the labour market, and high-level research is done and excellent education is offered at the university.

Travelling exhibition of the University of Tartu “Through hardships to the stars” allows people in five Estonian cities to get to know the stories of people connected to the university who have dared to take risks and face failure and showed determination in reaching for the stars. The exhibition created in cooperation with the University of Tartu Museum was opened today, 18 May, in Tallinn Telliskivi Creative City. From June, it will move on to Viljandi, Pärnu, Narva and Tartu.

Starter Tartu spring programme comes to an end with the spring semester. This semester was a challenge for both the Startup Lab and the students, because instead of physical meetings, all activities were organised online. Nevertheless, a large number of enterprising students completed the programme.

The graduation ceremonies of the University of Tartu are held from 15 to 30 June in person. In Tartu, the ceremonies take place on the square in front of the Old Anatomical Theatre. The graduation of Viljandi Culture Academy will take place as individual ceremonies that were well-received last year. In Narva, Pärnu and Tallinn, graduation ceremonies are held indoors.

7 June marked the end of the two-year international cooperation project "Innosme" led by University of Tartu Startup Lab. The project focused on developing cooperation between Ukrainian entrepreneurs and universities by promoting the development and growth of self-confidence of women entrepreneurs.
