Dear colleagues and PhD students,

We invite doctoral students of social sciences from all Estonian universities to submit papers and poster abstracts to the PhD Summer School.

The event will be a 2-day workshop on June 16-17, 2025, in Viljandi at the Grand Hotel Viljandi

The summer school offers excellent opportunities for doctoral students, primarily in economics and business administration, but also in political science, law and public administration, to receive feedback on their research projects, improve their presentation and research skills, and establish academic contacts with local researchers and experts. Articles related to doctoral theses in the field of economics and business administration compete for the Vello Vensel Prize, awarded by the Estonian Economic Associations.

Keynote speakers:

  • Kaire Põder (Estonian Business School) „Experiments in school choice".
  • Mari-Klara Stein (Taltech) „Digital work: Managerial, worker, and organizational perspectives".

Please register for the event and submit your paper or poster abstract using the submission form.

The deadline for submitting either a non-published paper related to the PhD dissertation or a poster abstract that introduces the research ideas and/or preliminary results is May 15 2025. NB! While the submission deadline is May 15, we would appreciate it if the PhD students interested in presenting in the summer school would inform organizers ASAP of their interest via e-mail (jaan.masso@ut.ee)

You will find guidelines for papers and posters and practical tips at the bottom of this invitation. Papers and poster abstracts will be pre-reviewed, and decisions will be announced by May 27, 2025.

With regard to financial matters, participation for Doctoral School members (as well as their supervisors) will be covered by the European Union Regional Development Fund. Costs to be covered are as follows: meals, materials, accommodation, and bus transfer from Tallinn/Tartu to Viljandi and back.

Important deadlines:
  • Submission deadline for a full paper or a poster abstract: May 15, 2025
  • Notification of acceptance of the submitted paper/poster abstract: May 27, 2025
  • Deadline for registration for the event: May 30, 2025
  • Deadline for submitting the final version of the paper or poster: June 2, 2025. Please upload your paper/poster (Your family name.pdf) here.

Guidelines for papers

Papers should be drawn up according to international standards. Submitted papers can be work-in-progress, and they can be updated later according to the pre-reviewer’s comments and/or author’s needs. Accepted papers will be presented and discussed at the summer school. Doctoral working papers in the area of Economics and Business Administration will compete for the Vello Vensel Award issued by the Estonian Economic Association.

Guidelines for posters

The proposal should provide sufficient detail about your research project, and the following information should be covered:

1. Poster title

2. Author(s) name(s) and institution(s)

3. A brief structured abstract (250-300 words) including objectives, relevance, methods, results, conclusions and keywords.

All posters must use the A0 portrait format (841 x 1189 mm/ 33.1 × 46.8 in). Deadline for submitting final posters: June 2, 2025.

Accepted posters will be printed out at the cost of the Estonian Doctoral School for Social Sciences.
